The Assisted Decision Making (Capacity) Act 2015 is due to fully commence into Irish law in the coming months. This Act recognises the rights of people with disabilities to make decisions about their lives on an equal basis as people who do not have disabilities.
The Act means people with disabilities have a right to make decision about their property and affairs, health and welfare. It also provides for a supported framework for people who may need support making decisions. The Act will give people receiving supports from Avista the opportunity to exercise their rights to participate as equal members in society and have greater power to direct the course of their own lives.
The Decision Support Service (DSS) is a new service for all adults who have difficulties with their decision-making capacity. Its role is to promote the rights and interests of people who may need support with decision-making. The DSS will register and supervise new decision support arrangements.
Aine Flynn, Director of the DSS will present a webinar for families of people supported by Avista. This is a good opportunity for you as family members to find out more about the Act, the DSS and what changes might be brought about by the commencement of this Act.
