Avista Memory Service specialises in dementia services for people with intellectual disabilities working in partnership with Trinity College Dublin and Trinity Centre for Ageing and Intellectual Disability. They work together to conduct research on key issues in dementia including healthy aging and non-pharmacological post diagnostic interventions for people with intellectual disability.

In 2023, The Avista Memory Service received funding from the Nurse and Midwifery Practice development  (NMPDU) to conduct research on Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) for people with Intellectual Disabilities at increased risk of developing dementia.

Over the last 18 months, the teams have worked with people from across Avista’s day services in Dublin and Limerick as part of a national Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) study. They have identified some really interesting results and identified trends that may have a big impact on people supported by Avista across Dublin, Limerick and North Tipperary/Offaly.

This study demonstrates that Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) can be delivered effectively within day services, promoting healthy ageing and improved quality of life for people with disabilities. This partnership has proven that by working together, we can translate complex research into tangible, real-world supports that truly make a difference.
